Redesigning the bathrooms of a traditional terrace in Woollahra is no small feat. Compact spaces, existing architectural footprints, and a client’s love for mid-century design added layers of complexity and creativity to this project. For Mia Lake Interiors and Mack Building Group, this wasn’t another renovation - it was about elevating the space for modern living whilst celebrating the homes original character.

Compact Spaces, Big Impact

Working within the constraints of a traditional terrace meant that every square meter had to count. "The challenge was designing bathrooms that were not only visually striking but also highly functional," Mia explains. This delicate balance of form and function guided every decision, resulting in spaces that are as practical as they are beautiful.

The Standout Powder Room

Once a neglected corner of the home, the powder room became a highlight of the design. The bold choice of Nood Co’s Shelf 01 basin in Clay immediately draws the eye, its earthy tones perfectly complementing the timber-panelled walls. Together, they create a warm, inviting space with just the right amount of drama.

“This room was about transformation,” Mia says. “It was a forgotten, unused area, and now it’s a bright and welcoming space that adds real character to the home.”

Bathrooms Inspired by Nature

For the other bathrooms, Mia took inspiration from the property’s lush, green surroundings. Rich green hues were introduced, creating a seamless connection between the interiors and the outdoors. “The goal was to honour the home’s traditional style while bringing in a fresh perspective,” Mia explains.

The earthy tones and thoughtful tile choices bring depth and interest to the spaces. Mia’s signature approach - unexpected uses of colour and tile format - shines through, ensuring each room feels unique yet cohesive.

Attention to Detail

Beyond the bathrooms, the project also included wardrobes, where Mia’s love for mid-century and retro design came to life. Solid timber doors with skinny shaker profiles added a touch of craftsmanship and subtle elegance, tying the spaces together beautifully.

“This project was all about balance,” Mia shares. “Maximising functionality while staying true to the home’s classic charm. Every decision was about creating a timeless look that felt perfectly in tune with its surroundings.”

A New Chapter for a Classic Terrace

With the collaboration of Mack Building, the Woollahra terrace now boasts a series of bathrooms that feel anything but constrained. They are warm, practical, and effortlessly connected to the home’s architectural history.

For Mia Lake Interiors, this project was a reminder that even the smallest spaces have the potential to make a big impact. “It’s incredibly rewarding to take traditional spaces and reimagine them for modern living,” she reflects. And in Woollahra, this thoughtful approach has created bathrooms that are timeless, cohesive, and full of character.
